Grand Rapids Hosts Annual Donut Dash 5K to Support Police Foundation on Fat Tuesday

March is just around the corner, and while the weather is still a bit chilly, the spirits in Grand Rapids, Michigan, are warming up! The city recently hosted its highly anticipated annual Donut Dash 5K, and what a sweet day it was! Held on Fat Tuesday, this unique race not only brought the community together for some light-hearted competition, but also raised much-needed funds for the Grand Rapids Police Foundation.

For the past seven years, the Donut Dash has been a delightful tradition. Thanks to proceeds from t-shirt sales and generous donations, the race continues to leave a positive mark on the local community. The event kicked off at the Red Lion parking lot at 6 p.m., enticing participants to put on their running shoes and embrace an evening filled with fun. Not to mention, it was also about enjoying those mouth-watering Polish pastries, paczki!

Culinary Treats Along the Route

What sets the Donut Dash apart from other races is its distinctive twist: delicious stops along the route! As runners made their way through downtown, they had the chance to fuel up on paczki at popular locations like Gazelle Sports and the Bridge Street Market. Each participant could enjoy one scrumptious paczek at each that’s carefully designated along the way. Think of it as a blend of fitness and culinary delight!

Adding to the excitement, many participants earned raffle tickets by indulging in these festive treats at each stop. The more paczki they enjoyed, the more tickets they earned for a chance to win fabulous prizes. It’s a win-win if you ask anyone who participated!

A Community Initiative

The event isn’t just about running and eating—it also has a heartwarming purpose. With Police Chief Eric Winstrom taking part in the race and sharing insights about the importance of the foundation, attendees saw firsthand how their participation directly benefits the community. The Grand Rapids Police Foundation plays a pivotal role in supporting various outreach programs and initiatives designed to keep the city safe. This event makes sure that the police remain connected to the community they serve.

Everyone loves a good cause, and the Donut Dash did not disappoint. Lead organizer, Jessica Gutowski-Slaydon, emphasized how this yearly tradition is a fun way to stay active while giving back to the community. Encouraging elements like matching donations from the main sponsor, Swift Printing, up to $7,500, totally boosted the fundraising spirit, targeting an overall goal of $15,000. How great is that?

After the Race Fun

Once the race ended, participants headed over to Jolly Pumpkin for some much-needed dinner and post-race celebrations. Not only did they enjoy a well-deserved meal, but they were also treated to additional paczki from the Bridge Street Market, ensuring nobody left without a sweet treat! Talk about the perfect ending to an exciting day of community engagement.

Joining Forces for a Good Cause

With the Donut Dash continuing to attract locals in search of a unique twist on the traditional running event, it’s clear that the community spirit is at an all-time high. This event masterfully merged physical activity, delicious indulgences, and a focus on supporting local law enforcement initiatives. As Grand Rapids moves forward into the new season, it’s clear there will always be a place for fun, fitness, and camaraderie on a Fat Tuesday!
