Allendale Shines Bright as GVSU Seniors Take Center Stage in “Moiré Patterns”

In the charming town of Allendale, Michigan, four talented seniors from Grand Valley State University recently lit up the stage with their dance showcase titled Moiré Patterns. The performance, held on April 11 and 12, 2025, marked the culmination of their hard work and creativity as part of their capstone course in the university’s Department of Music, Theatre, and Dance. Combining their unique identities and experiences, these talented dancers took audiences through a mesmerizing journey.

Unraveling the Theme

The theme of Moiré Patterns was inspired by the optical illusion created by overlapping grids, which intriguingly creates a sense of movement. The dancers embraced this concept as they presented a variety of pieces showcasing their individual strengths and collective artistry. With a range of themes exploring resilience, emotional identity, and societal challenges, the performance was a captivating experience that left the audience in awe.

Spotlight on Individual Pieces

Among the standout performances was a self-choreographed solo named Uncharted Chapter by Makenna Krylowicz. Focusing on resilience and self-identity, Makenna expressed her intent to emphasize authenticity and joy in her final performance with the dance department. Her group piece, Interfuse, dazzled spectators with vibrant neon costumes and a masterful blend of rhythmic hip-hop and contemporary dance styles. The aesthetic was eye-catching and captivating, drawing in the audience right from the start.

Emma Armijo also brought her unique flair to the stage with her group piece, Corporeal Projections (Of what we can’t control). This captivating performance delved into the intricacies of emotional identity and the complexities of an individual’s psyche. Emma’s solo offered a deeper, more personal perspective, as it reflected her own growth and journey throughout her four years at GVSU. Performers described the experience of dancing in Emma’s pieces as deeply cathartic and personal, highlighting the intimate connection they felt with the material.

Andre Glover made an impact with his group piece, A Reflection of Me, which seamlessly combined contemporary ballet movements and a reflection on his own journey and challenges faced during college. His solo, aptly named Unseen, shed light on themes of authenticity and vulnerability, resonating with many in the audience. Meanwhile, Hannah Bernhardt’s group piece, When the Dust Settles, interpreted the effects of societal challenges on individuals, delivering a powerful message through contemporary and modern dance forms.

The Heart of the Dance Community

The showcase highlighted not just the talent of GVSU’s dance seniors but also the solidarity and support that flourished within the dance community. Dancers like Haley Rosendale participated in multiple pieces, showcasing the rewarding nature of their capstone projects. Each senior was deeply involved in various facets of the production process, from organizing auditions to choreographing and securing funding, showcasing their dedication to their craft and to one another.

Looking Ahead

The exhilarating performance truly encapsulated the unique identities of each dancer while celebrating their journey through dance. But the excitement doesn’t stop here! The upcoming Spring Dance Concert is set to take place on April 18 and 19, where audiences can expect even more breathtaking choreographed pieces by faculty and guest artists at GVSU’s Louis Armstrong Theatre. One notable piece, Life Forms, is being choreographed by guest artist Jovita Weibel, reflecting on humanity’s relationship with the planet – a must-see for those who love dance!

With the Moiré Patterns performance now a beautiful memory, GVSU’s dance students continue to prepare for their next debut, blending artistry with powerful themes that resonate with all.
