Grand Rapids Celebrates David Faber’s Remarkable Achievements in Catholic Education

In the heart of Grand Rapids, a vibrant celebration is taking place as David Faber, the dedicated superintendent of Catholic schools in the Diocese of Grand Rapids, has been honored with the prestigious Dr. Karen M. Ristau Innovations Award. This award, granted by the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA), is presented to individuals, schools, or programs that play a key role in enhancing the mission of Catholic education through formal and informal innovation.

A Visionary Leader

Faber, who has been at the forefront of Catholic education since he began his career in the Diocese back in 1993, has truly made waves since stepping into the role of superintendent in 2010. In the years since, he has developed an impressive track record of fostering a collaborative education mission. Through initiatives like the “Catholic Schools: Bridging Faith and Future” plan, Faber has focused on creating strong ties between educational institutions and the faith community.

One of his standout contributions is the organization of biannual school summits for school leaders. These summits are designed to share best practices, strengthen connections, and promote a collective vision for the future of Catholic schools. Additionally, Faber has implemented a robust faculty faith-formation program, ensuring that educators are equipped to not only teach academic subjects but to nourish the spiritual lives of their students.

Growing Enrollment and New Opportunities

Under Faber’s leadership, Catholic schools in the diocese have not only seen the establishment of two new schools but also the revitalization of three existing institutions, complete with new names and missions that resonate with contemporary families. The impact is clear as enrollment numbers have soared, with over 6,400 students currently attending diocesan schools. This includes more than 4,000 in a network of 26 elementary schools and over 1,300 in five thriving high schools.

With an average student-to-teacher ratio of 18 to 1 and impressive graduation rates of 99% in high schools, it’s no wonder that so many families are choosing Catholic education for their children. Moreover, about 11% of the student body comprises non-Catholic students, with some rural schools having non-Catholic populations as high as 30%. This inclusive environment reflects Faber’s commitment to reaching a diverse audience.

Preparing for a New Chapter

As Faber heads toward retirement following the 2024-2025 school year, his dedication to Catholic education remains steadfast. With five married daughters and 15 grandchildren to support, he is set to embrace this new chapter in life while still making an impact in the community. Plans are already in motion for him to kickstart Seek First Catholic Leadership Consulting, a venture aimed at supporting clergy and parishes in the realms of evangelization and education.

In addition to these plans, Faber has also focused on making Catholic education more affordable for families through various scholarships and flexible tuition rates based on income. This commitment to accessibility is a hallmark of his tenure and aligns with his vision for an integrated curriculum that nurtures the entire child—mind, body, and spirit.

A Lasting Legacy

Faber’s educational approach also emphasizes the importance of family values, which he believes has contributed to the increasing interest in Catholic schools, particularly in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. With his innovative spirit and unwavering faith guiding his work, Faber’s contributions to Catholic education in Grand Rapids will undoubtedly leave a lasting legacy for years to come.

As the diocese continues to flourish under his leadership, it’s clear that David Faber’s hard work and dedication have transformed the landscape of Catholic education, impacting thousands of students and their families within the community.
