Leadership discussions at Grand Rapids City Hall signify a new chapter for the community.
Grand Rapids City Hall is undergoing significant leadership changes with the retirement of long-serving public services director James Hurt and the appointment of Wayne Jernberg as interim director. Annabelle Wilkinson has been named the new chief sustainability officer, and Brandon Davis takes charge of the city’s Office of Equity and Engagement. These changes aim to enhance community engagement and sustainability efforts in Grand Rapids.
In a wave of transformations, the vibrant city of Grand Rapids has announced key administrative changes that are sure to shape its future! On February 24, City Manager Mark Washington revealed a shake-up in leadership, kicking off a new chapter for public service and community engagement in the area.
First up, let’s talk about James Hurt, the managing director of public services who recently bid farewell after an impressive 26 years with the city. Having served diligently for nearly two decades, Hurt oversaw pivotal departments including Environmental Services, Public Works, and the Water departments since being appointed in October 2019. His departure on February 21 marks the end of an era as he stepped down from a role that positively impacted the community through various initiatives.
With Hurt’s retirement, there’s excitement as Wayne Jernberg, the Water Systems Manager, takes on some of the responsibilities on an interim basis. Jernberg will be focusing on the crucial areas of water and wastewater oversight. This change aims to ensure that the city’s water services continue to operate smoothly during this transition period, allowing residents to rest assured about their water supply and sanitation services.
Next in line is Annabelle Wilkinson, who has officially taken the reins as the city’s new chief sustainability officer! After a thorough national search, the decision fell on Wilkinson, who has been a part of the Grand Rapids team for over five years. Previously serving as the interim chief sustainability officer since June, she has been instrumental in *driving forward the city’s Climate Action and Adaptation Plan*. With a strong background as the environmental and climate justice specialist, her appointment signals the city’s commitment to a greener, more sustainable future.
Not to be overshadowed, Brandon Davis has been appointed as the managing director for both the city’s Office of Equity and Engagement and the Office of Oversight and Public Accountability. Davis has been serving in an interim capacity since November 2023, and his focus has been on boosting diversity in the community and among city workforces. His efforts also extend to programs aimed at civilian violence prevention, such as the impactful Cure Violence GR initiative. With a solid legal background as both a defense attorney and a prosecutor in Detroit, as well as degrees from Central Michigan University and Wayne State University, Davis brings a wealth of experience to the table.
The recent leadership shifts look to pave the way for enhanced service delivery and community engagement in Grand Rapids. Each appointee brings unique strengths and perspectives, ensuring that the city’s administration remains equipped to tackle the challenges ahead while focusing on the wellbeing and needs of residents.
