Students and staff at Innovation Central High School celebrate the renaming ceremony of the Hattie Beverly Academy.
In a heartfelt ceremony, Grand Rapids Public Schools renamed a teaching academy to honor Hattie Beverly, a trailblazer in education and civil rights. The Hattie Beverly Academy of Teaching, Learning, and Social Justice reflects her groundbreaking achievements as one of the first African-Americans to graduate from the district and its first African-American teacher. The renaming serves as a reminder of her impact and inspires current students to be agents of change.
In a heartwarming move to honor an extraordinary figure in their history, Grand Rapids Public Schools has officially renamed a teaching academy at Innovation Central High School. It will now be called the Hattie Beverly Academy of Teaching, Learning, and Social Justice. This significant change took place during a dedicated ceremony which unfolded at 10 a.m. on a Friday, perfectly timed with the celebration of Black History Month this February.
Nestled at 421 Fountain St. NE, Innovation Central High School is now home to a legacy that dates back to the late 19th century. Hattie Beverly was a remarkable woman; she didn’t just break barriers, she smashed them! As one of the first African-Americans to graduate from the Grand Rapids Public Schools, she officially finished high school at Central High School in 1895. But she didn’t stop there.
In June 1899, Beverly made her mark on the district by becoming its first African-American teacher at Congress Elementary School. This was a groundbreaking achievement at a time when such opportunities were scarce for African-Americans. Although her teaching career was short-lived—she left in 1902 after getting married—her impact was profound. Tragically, Beverly’s life came to an early end when she passed away at the age of 30 in 1904.
The celebration at Innovation Central was more than just a name change; it served as a heartfelt tribute to Hattie Beverly’s legacy as an educator, pioneer, civil rights icon, and social change agent. During the ceremony, district leaders, school administrators, and students honored her contributions and the inspiration she continues to provide. It was a moment filled with pride and reflection, as those in attendance recognized the trail that Beverly blazed for future generations.
To further commemorate her legacy, Grand Rapids Community College presents an annual award in Hattie Beverly’s name. This award is given to an Outstanding African-American Educator, ensuring that her impact continues to be felt within the educational community. Recognizing the individuals who follow in her footsteps serves as a reminder of the progress that has been made, while also highlighting the work that still lies ahead.
This renaming ceremony marks an important connection between history and the present, particularly for the current students of Innovation Central High School. It serves as a reminder that they, too, can be agents of change and break their own barriers, just as Beverly did over a century ago.
The entire event was filled with positivity and an uplifting spirit, bringing together students, staff, and community members to celebrate a legacy that has inspired so many. The Hattie Beverly Academy of Teaching, Learning, and Social Justice is more than just a name; it’s a commitment to nurturing future generations who will continue to advocate for education, equality, and social justice.
As Grand Rapids looks toward the future, this renaming serves as a beacon of hope and progress, reminding everyone of the importance of recognizing the contributions of those who came before us. Thanks to Hattie Beverly, the path for many has been paved, and her legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of countless students to come.
