Leadership in Grand Rapids Catholic schools

News Summary

The Diocese of Grand Rapids has announced Sarah Grey as the new superintendent of Catholic schools, effective July 1, 2025. Grey, who has extensive experience in education, previously served as the assistant superintendent and aims to build on her predecessor’s legacy amidst growing enrollment figures.

Exciting News for Grand Rapids: A New Leader for Catholic Schools

Grand Rapids is buzzing with excitement following the recent announcement of Sarah Grey as the new superintendent of Catholic schools in the Diocese of Grand Rapids. This news comes as the diocese prepares for a significant transition, as Grey will officially take the helm on July 1, 2025. She takes over from Dave Faber, who has dedicated an impressive 15 years to the role and announced his retirement last May.

A Bright Future Ahead

With an extensive background in education, Grey brings valuable experience to her new position. Since Fall 2020, she has served as the assistant superintendent for Catholic schools in the Diocese and is ready to lead the charge for the upcoming school year and beyond. Selecting a new superintendent was no small task, and a committee of diocesan and community leaders conducted a thorough search to find the perfect candidate. The choice of Grey is a testament to her commitment to improving the lives of students and supporting their growth in faith.

Cultivating Catholic Education

Grey is no stranger to the world of Catholic education. With 20 years under her belt, her journey began as a middle school teacher at Guardian Angels Catholic School in Denver, Colorado. Her dedication quickly propelled her into leadership roles, serving as assistant principal at Annunciation Catholic School and eventually principal at Assumption Catholic School, both located in Denver. This vast experience positions her well to provide strong guidance to the 31 Catholic elementary and secondary schools under her care in the diocese.

Roots in Catholic Schools

Growing up in Toledo, Ohio, Grey was immersed in the Catholic school experience from an early age, attending institutions from preschool all the way through 12th grade. This background adds a personal and passionate touch to her leadership style as she understands firsthand the impact that Catholic education can have on students’ lives.

A Solid Educational Foundation

Grey’s educational achievements are nothing short of impressive. She holds a bachelor’s degree in anthropology—though perhaps more importantly, she carries a minor in education from the prestigious University of Notre Dame. Her passion for learning didn’t stop there, as she earned two master’s degrees: one in education through the Alliance for Catholic Education program and another in educational leadership through Notre Dame’s Mary Ann Remick Leadership Program. This educational foundation equips her with the tools necessary to guide the diocese into a bright future.

Building on Legacy

In her upcoming role, Grey aims to build upon the remarkable legacy established by Dave Faber, who has seen significant growth during his tenure. Under Faber’s leadership, the diocese has witnessed a remarkable four consecutive years of enrollment growth. In fact, since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, enrollment has risen by an impressive 7.23%, bringing the total to 6,456 students for the 2024-25 school year. Grey’s focus will be on sustaining this positive trend and working closely with Bishop Walkowiak to ensure that the schools remain aligned with the diocese’s evangelizing mission.

A Bright Path Ahead

The appointment of Sarah Grey marks a promising chapter for the Diocese of Grand Rapids and its Catholic schools. With her extensive background and commitment to education, she aims to foster an environment where students can thrive spiritually and academically. Excitement is in the air as the community looks forward to new adventures in Catholic education and the bright future ahead!
